How many of us find ourselves wishing for a quiet day?
A day of no rushing from A to B.
A day where we can just stop, or even just slow down?
So many of us seem to spend our days constantly rushing, rushing to get out the door on time, rushing to get to work, rushing to get the kids to school, rushing to make that appointment, rushing to reach that deadline.
And if you’re anything like me (and many others I know), you try to create routines and structure, not because you can’t “just go with the flow,” but because without a little structure, the chaos takes over.
However… life doesn’t usually unfold in neat routines.
And a realistic day can look more like this…
You wake up to your alarm screaming at you (or maybe it’s the kids). You turn it off and wish you could have just five more minutes.
Reality quickly sets in, time is ticking, and if you don’t get moving soon, you’re going to be late for the first thing on your to-do list.
Then, in the middle of the morning rush…
Messages start arriving, someone needs something. Then you get a reminder about something you completely forgot about, and panic sets in because you’re already running out of time.
The day is gaining momentum fast.
And before you know it, you’re being pulled in multiple directions, helping everyone else before you’ve even had a chance to look at your to-do list.
Sound familiar?…
Well you’re not alone!
For years, I used to think I was doing life wrong. I wondered if I was being unrealistic to believe that we could all achieve and maintain a perfectly balanced life, one with equal parts of rushing and relaxing.
Like I’d seen so often on TV, on social media, and in magazines.
Until one day, somewhere between my second cup of reheated coffee and replying “yes, of course-no problem” for the fifth time that morning, I started asking myself…
What does balance really mean and look like?
And I realised something…
Balance looks different for everyone, and I’ve realised it’s not necessarily about equal parts.
Balance isn’t about getting everything done in one day, so you can earn “free time.”
Sometimes balance is knowing when to say “no.”
Sometimes it’s saying, “That’s enough for today.”
Sometimes it’s stopping long enough to realise you haven’t actually sat down all day.
And some days?
Balance simply means everyone is fed and nobody cried, including me!
Some days are work heavy, some days are family heavy, and some days are just simply about surviving the chaos!
So, if today didn’t look or feel balanced, if the routines fell apart and the to-do list grew longer instead of shorter… that’s okay.
Because balance isn’t about perfection, it’s about awareness, it’s about knowing when to slow down, and choosing where your energy goes, and it’s about giving yourself permission to stop when you want to or need to.
It’s found in learning to still live within the chaos, and knowing that even on the busiest days, we are allowed to pause, to breathe, and to just be.
And what about that quiet day we’ve been wishing for?
Well maybe it doesn’t magically appear when everything is done, maybe we have to actually choose it.
Choose to slow down.
Choose to say no.
Choose to leave something unfinished.
Choose to protect our time and our peace.
Balance isn’t something we just stumble across, it’s something we decide.
With warmth, love and light
